Irregular Verbs Board Game for ESL Students

This is a fairly simple game to setup, here are the materials you will need:
  • Dice
  • Buttons
  • Laminator (if you wish to laminate the mats)
  • Scissors (to cut the recording sheets)
I would firstly get the students in groups of 3 or 4 and then explain that they will need to choose one coloured button to represent themselves. They will move this button along to indicate which box they land on.

The students will soon get the hang of this, at first it's quite a task for them to understand what the buttons and the dice do, but once you introduce them to these kind of games they will be hooked!

Rules of the game

Students will take turns rolling the dice and moving their button along according to the number they rolled. They will then read the irregular verb on the box and therefore create a sentence in the past tense using that verb.

What an excellent way to practice irregular verbs! My ESL students loved this game. I also included a recording sheet where they got to record the irregular verbs. We then worked as a whole class to conjugate the irregular past tense verbs.
